YOU ONLY HAVE 14 DAYS FROM THE ACCIDENT TO SEE A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL. If you've been in an accident, fill in the information below.

Important information you need to know if you've been in a car accident

1. 14 DAYS: A new law passed a few years ago in Florida only gives you 14 days from the date of the accident to see a medical professional (ER, Chiropractor, PT, even Dentist, etc.) in order to be able to use the $10,000 provided to you by your car insurance to pay medical bills. If you wait until day 15, you will not be able to use it and the cost for care will be your responsibility. So, make sure you go see someone in the 14 day span, even if you think you may be fine and aren't feeling any pain right away. This leads me to the second most important thing you need to know.

2. See someone, even if you don't have any "pain" right away. Many people do not experience pain immediately after an accident. Sometimes their adrenaline is still pumping for a while, sometimes it takes a while for you body to process that you are hurt and for the inflammatory process to kick in. Whatever the reason, I have seen countless people that come to me and say "I felt fine for a few days, then I started to feel a little ache that I thought would go away and so I took some Advil but it's been a few weeks now and the pain is just not going away." This can be a BIG problem. Especially if you refer back to #1. The moral of the story is, if you are involved in an accident, see someone right away to make sure you are ok. Most of you are not trained medical professionals and don't know how to recognize a serious injury.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Do I need an attorney? - I usually at least tell my patients to speak with an attorney after a car accident. Typically there are a lot of legal questions that people have and for that reason, I tell them to speak with an attorney. But you DO NOT NEED TO HAVE AN ATTORNEY. You can still get treatment and have the insurance pay for it. At this point in my career, I have worked with many attorneys in Orlando and have good working relationships with a lot of them. If you would like input on an attorney, I would be happy to discuss that with you and help try to steer you in the right direction.

2. Should I see my Primary Care Physician? - 99% of Primary care doctors will tell you that they do not treat patients that have been involved in a car accident, even if they are YOUR primary care doctor. Most of the time it is a waste of time to call them seeking treatment. If you would like your primary kept up to date on your treatment progress, you can let us know and we will gladly send your records over to them so they know what is going on.

3. Does Insurance cover treatment? - Your car insurance will pay up to $10,000 for your medical treatment after a car accident, regardless if you are at fault. Florida's law requires that we go through your car insurance company.

4. Do I have to pay out of pocket? - You will NOT have to pay any money out of pocket when you come in for treatment.

5. What is a typical timeline for treatment after a car accident? - First, you must see a medical professional within the 14 day rule to have your insurance pay for your treatment. Typically, treatment can last anywhere from 1 month to 5 months after the accident. It just depends on how badly you are injured and what your injuries are.

6. Do you work with other types of doctors? - We work with a lot of different types of doctors and frequently refer to them for treatment. We work with pain management doctors, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons and neurologists. Typically, when we refer you over to them for evaluation, they will be able to get you in much faster than if you were to call yourself.

7. Do you treat children? - We do treat children, absolutely. Many times they are in the car as well and need to be checked out as well to make sure they didn't suffer any injuries. Kids are resilient. They usually respond very well to treatment and bounce back fast so long as we catch it early.

8. What if I'm at fault for the accident, can I still get treatment and the insurance pay for it? - If you are at fault for the accident, you can still receive treatment for your injuries and have your insurance pay for that treatment. They will pay for your injuries, regardless of who is at fault.
